Plantain is the ultimate herbal band-aid! It brings more peace to everything it touches. It's amazing at pulling out infection and inflammation in the mucous membranes and also helps to heal topical bites, stings, sunburn, and rashes. If your skin is hot and red, reach for some plantain! (Plantago major)
Why We Love It
Here are some of the reasons why we love Plantain...
1) WOUND CARE - Plantain can be used as an herbal band-aid. A leaf can be wrapped around any wound and/or a poultice can be made by crushing up a plantain leaf and then putting it on a wound. It helps to draw out infection and inflammation. It's also great for cooling a hot rash, bite, or sting.
2) SOOTHES THE DIGESTIVE TRACT - The seeds of plantain are mucilaginous and are similar to psyllium seeds. They can be used just like psyllium to cleanse and disinfect the colon. Take with plenty of water to help cleanse your digestive tract.
3) BREAKS UP COMPACT SOILS - Plantain has a deep tap root and helps to break up dried and compacted soils.
How to Grow It
Here's how to grow Plantain:
SUN | FULL SUN OR PARTIAL SHADE |
MOISTURE | REGULAR, WELL DRAINING SOIL |
GROWING ZONES | USDA 3-9 (Not sure? Find your growing zone here) |
SIZE | 1-2 FEET TALL & WIDE |
PRO TIP |
Wait until the seed stalks turn brown before harvesting your plantain seeds. Plantain likes to multiply, so give it some space or cut off the flower heads before they drop seeds if you'd like to keep it small and tidy. Winter Sowing is the easiest way to start these seeds. Here's a seed-starting tutorial for you. You won't believe how easy it is! |
